A MacWhisper Alternative Built for Dictation, With a Coach and AI Writing Included

If you want MacWhisper for dictation, Aurator is built for it, with cleanup, AI writing and a speaking coach in one US$29 payment. From MacWhisper's pages.

If what you want from MacWhisper is dictation, talking into every app on your Mac all day and getting clean text back, Aurator is the better choice for most people who write a lot. In MacWhisper, dictation is one feature inside a transcription app, and its AI cleanup needs Pro and either your own AI key or a local model you run yourself. In Aurator, dictation is the whole app. Every dictation is cleaned up on your Mac with no key and no prompt, the AI writing runs on Apple's model on your Mac, a coach scores how you speak, and it costs US$29 once, where MacWhisper Pro is €64.

If most of your work is recordings, interviews, meetings and subtitles, MacWhisper is far ahead of Aurator there, and I say so plainly near the end.

I make Aurator, so please read this knowing that. Everything I say about MacWhisper comes from its own website, its Gumroad page, its help pages and its App Store listing, all checked on 7 October 2026, with the links at the end. I have not tested MacWhisper myself, so I only tell you what its maker says it does.

Why Aurator is the better choice if dictation is what you want

  1. Dictation is the whole app. It is built around the moment you talk, in every app with a text field.
  2. Cleanup with no key and no prompt. Aurator's own rules clean every dictation on your Mac.
  3. AI writing is in the price. On a Mac with Apple Intelligence, rewrites, voice edits and Write for me run on Apple's model on your Mac. MacWhisper's AI needs Pro and your own key or a local model.
  4. It coaches you. Six scores with the formula shown, your crutch words counted, seven levels, 18 spoken lessons, and a Dashboard. I could not find a speaking coach anywhere on MacWhisper's pages.
  5. Every AI draft is checked and waits for your Return.
  6. Your voice goes into Claude and ChatGPT. A guide built from what you said, with private details taken out.
  7. The rest is in the same payment. A dictionary that fixes misheard names and never changes a real word, a style for each app, and History with your audio.
  8. A longer refund. 30 days, against MacWhisper's 7.

Dictation is the whole app

You hold a key, Right Option by default or any key you choose, and speak. When you let go, your words land in the app you are in a moment later, cleaned up. Or you tap once to start and tap again to stop. Aurator pastes only into the app and the field where you started, and if something else is in front, it copies the text and tells you. It never presses Return in a chat or a terminal, it never listens in a password field, and your own clipboard comes back after each paste. Music or a podcast pauses while you talk, wherever macOS lets Aurator pause it.

MacWhisper's dictation sits inside a transcription app. Its free version lists system wide dictation, and Pro adds what it calls high quality dictation, automatic grammar improvement, and dictation with AI prompts, with different prompts for different apps. Only the direct version from its website dictates. The App Store version, Whisper Transcription, has no dictation at all, its help pages say.

Cleanup and AI writing, with no key

MacWhisper's help page says its AI features need a Pro licence and your own AI key, and its website says you can also run local models through Ollama or LM Studio. If you like to write your own prompts and pick your own provider, that suits you. If you would rather just talk, that is setup you do before your first clean sentence.

Aurator needs none of that.

  1. Cleanup on every dictation. Aurator's own rules take out um and uh and tidy the spacing and punctuation, with no model. After each paste, a short line tells you what changed, for example "3 fillers cut, 3 words tighter."
  2. Styles. Concise, Polished email and Bullet points, or one you write, and you can set one for each app, Polished email in Mail and plain in Slack.
  3. Edit by voice. Select some text and say "make this more formal".
  4. Write for me. Hold the edit key, which you choose yourself, say what you need, and Aurator writes the whole message.

On a Mac with Apple Intelligence, those last three run on Apple's own model on your Mac, with no key and no connection. On a Mac without it, they work with Cloud and your own Anthropic key.

Every AI draft waits for you, next to what you said, and goes in only when you press Return. Before you see it, plain rules check it. A Write for me draft is refused if it opens like a chatbot, leaves blanks to fill in, or adds a link, an amount of money, a date or a password request you never gave. A style or an edit is also refused if it drops or adds a "not", moves numbers to different things, or obeys instructions hidden in the selected text.

A coach that measures how you speak

I could not find anything like this on MacWhisper's pages.

  1. Six scores, each with its formula. Pace, fluency, directness, concision, clarity and vocabulary. Vocabulary, for example, scores 55 when 60 percent of each run of 50 words are different words, and 2 points more or less for every percent above or below.
  2. Your crutch words, counted. The filler you lean on and how many times it shows up, the word you soften with, your most repeated word and your longest sentence, all from your own dictations.
  3. Seven levels. An Aura Score from Hesitant Speaker to Master Communicator. Only dictations of 25 spoken words or more count, and the score stays capped until there is enough real speech behind it.
  4. Lessons. Eighteen short lessons, such as "One idea per sentence", that you answer out loud. Lesson answers never count in your score.
  5. A Dashboard. Words a minute, speaking time and words dictated with trend lines, your filler rate per 100 words over time, a 120-day heat map, and the hours and apps where you talk.

The coach measures your own live speaking, so file transcripts stay out of it. More on this in The Power of Your Voice.

Your words spelled right, and kept with their audio

Add a name or a piece of jargon once and Aurator listens for it. When a name of five letters or more still comes out wrong, it is corrected by spelling and by sound, and a word the Mac's spelling dictionary knows is never changed, so "strip" never becomes "Stripe". Replacements are exact, and Aurator suggests names that keep coming up in your last 200 dictations.

Every dictation stays in History with its recording. Play it back at up to twice the speed, search it, keep favourites, see what you said beside the AI version, and export what you find as Markdown.

Your voice, in Claude and ChatGPT

From about 30 of your longer dictations, Aurator builds My Voice, a guide to how you speak and write, from words you actually spoke. Every sentence is checked, and any sentence with an email address, a phone number, a link, an amount of money, a health detail, a private family event, a name or a long quote is taken out, and Aurator shows you what it removed. One button downloads it as a skill for Claude, another copies it for ChatGPT, and Write for me uses it too. How to Make Claude Write Like You walks through it step by step.

What each one costs, side by side

MacWhisper's website lists a free version, free forever, and MacWhisper Pro at €64, paid once, with lifetime updates. Its Gumroad page shows €65 for one personal Pro licence, meant for your own devices with a soft limit of three, and a refund if you ask within 7 days. MacWhisper lists its prices in euros, so I have left them in euros.

Aurator is US$29 once for one Mac, US$49 for three Macs, or US$69 for every Mac signed in to your Apple account. Every update is included, and there is a full refund within 30 days.

One more thing, if you do buy MacWhisper. Its own site warns that there are scam websites pretending to be MacWhisper, and says every real purchase goes through its Gumroad page or the App Store. Please start from macwhisper.com.

When MacWhisper still fits

  1. Files and recordings. Speaker recognition, .srt and .vtt subtitles, batches, YouTube links, watched folders, and exports to .md, .pdf, .html and .docx. Aurator only transcribes a file to plain text.
  2. Meetings. It records meetings in Zoom, Teams, Webex and more. Aurator does not record meetings or calls.
  3. A free version you can keep, with dictation included.
  4. More languages. 100, against Aurator's ten.
  5. Choice and automation. Your own speech model and AI provider, a command line tool, Notion and Zapier.
  6. Older Macs and other devices. macOS 14, Intel Macs, and iPhone and iPad.

You can also use both. Keep MacWhisper for interviews and subtitles, and use Aurator for the writing you do all day, each with its own shortcut.

What I would tell you to do

If your week is full of emails, messages and notes you would rather say than type, give Aurator seven days of that work, and then look at what the coach found.
