Why Aurator Is the Better Superwhisper Alternative for Most Mac Users
Superwhisper charges for its AI, and most of its AI runs in the cloud. Aurator includes AI writing on your Mac and a speaking coach, for US$29 once.
By Nelson, maker of Aurator

If you write a lot on a Mac, Aurator is the better choice for most people, because the part of Superwhisper you pay for comes with Aurator, and it stays on your Mac. Superwhisper's free plan types your words, but it leaves out everything that runs them through AI. For that you need Pro, at US$84.99 a year or US$249.99 once, and Superwhisper's own documentation says most of its language models run in the cloud. Aurator cleans up and rewrites on your Mac, coaches how you speak, and costs US$29 once.
I make Aurator, so please read this knowing that. Everything I say about Superwhisper comes from its own plans page, its documentation and its privacy policy, all checked on 7 October 2026, with the links at the end. Near the end I also say plainly who Superwhisper still suits.
Why Aurator is the better choice for most Mac users
- AI writing for US$29 once. Superwhisper puts its AI in Pro, at US$84.99 a year or US$249.99 once.
- The writing stays on your Mac too. On a Mac with Apple Intelligence, Aurator's rewrites, voice edits and Write for me run on Apple's model on your Mac. Superwhisper starts you on its cloud models.
- A coach, not only statistics. Six scores with the formula shown, your crutch words counted, seven levels, 18 spoken lessons, and a Dashboard with your filler rate.
- Every AI draft is checked and waits for your Return.
- Your voice in any Claude or ChatGPT chat, with no code. A guide with private details taken out, not read access to your dictation history.
- Nothing to choose. No model to pick or manage yourself.
- The rest is in the same payment. A dictionary that fixes misheard names and never changes a real word, a style for each app, and History with your audio.
The AI features cost far less
Superwhisper's free plan gives you unlimited dictation with its local Whisper models, a custom vocabulary, text replacements and up to two modes. What it leaves out is the AI processing, its cloud models and file transcription. Those are in Pro, and new users get 3,000 words of every Pro feature to try them.
Pro is US$8.49 a month, US$84.99 a year, or US$249.99 once, and one licence covers all your devices. Three years of Pro comes to about US$255 paid yearly, US$306 paid monthly, or US$250 for the lifetime licence.
Aurator is US$29 once for one Mac, US$49 for three Macs, or US$69 for every Mac on your Apple account. Every plan has every feature, AI writing included, and every update.
| Superwhisper | Aurator | |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Unlimited dictation with local models, no AI processing | 7 days, every feature |
| To try the AI | 3,000 words of every Pro feature for new users | The same 7 days |
| AI cleanup and rewriting | Pro only | Included in every plan |
| Paid | US$8.49 a month, US$84.99 a year, or US$249.99 once | US$29 once for one Mac |
| Three years | US$250 to US$306 | US$29 |
So for the AI features, Aurator costs less than an eighth of Superwhisper's lifetime licence.
AI writing that stays on your Mac
Superwhisper's setup guide starts you on its own cloud models, S1-Voice and S1-Language. Its documentation says most of its language models run in the cloud, even in modes with a local voice model. You can keep everything on your Mac with its Cohere Transcribe model and its small S1-mini model, but S1-mini cleans up English punctuation, numbers, dates and fillers, and the rest of its AI processing needs the internet.
Aurator does the writing on your Mac. On a Mac with Apple Intelligence, all of this runs on Apple's own model, with no key and no connection.
- Styles. Concise, Polished email and Bullet points, plus styles you write yourself. Standard keeps your words as you said them.
- A style for each app. Polished email in Mail, plain in Slack, and Spanish as the dictation language in WhatsApp.
- Edit by voice. Select text and say "shorten it" or "put it in Spanish".
- Write for me. Hold the edit key, say what you need, and Aurator writes the whole message.
Under all of it, Aurator's own rules clean every dictation with no model at all. They take out um and uh, and each language keeps its own list, so German äh and French euh go too. After each paste, a short line tells you what changed, for example "3 fillers cut, 3 words tighter." Without Apple Intelligence, the writing features work with Cloud and your own Anthropic key.
A coach, not only statistics
Superwhisper shows you statistics, the words you dictated, your average words per minute, the minutes you saved and the mode you use most.
Aurator measures how you speak, and then helps you change it.
- Six scores, each with its formula. Pace, fluency, directness, concision, clarity and vocabulary. Directness, for example, is 100, less 8 for every hedging word and 10 for every wind-up phrase, per 100 words spoken.
- Crutch words, with real counts. The coach shows the filler you lean on and how many times it shows up in your own dictations, the word you soften with, your most repeated word and your longest sentence.
- Levels you earn. An Aura Score with seven levels, from Hesitant Speaker to Master Communicator. Only dictations of 25 spoken words or more count, so short commands cannot lift your score.
- Lessons. Eighteen short lessons, such as "Say your point first", that you answer out loud, measured against the lesson's goal. Lesson answers never count in your score.
- A Dashboard. Words a minute, speaking time and words dictated with trend lines, your filler rate per 100 words over time, a 120-day heat map, and the hours and apps where you talk.
Drafts checked before you see them
A style, a voice edit or a Write for me draft waits for you. You see it next to what you said, and only Return puts it in. Escape cancels.
Before that, Aurator checks the draft with plain rules, no model. A Write for me draft is refused if it opens like a chatbot, leaves blanks to fill in, or adds a link, contact details, an amount of money, a date or a password request you never gave. A style or a voice edit is also refused if it drops or adds a "not", moves numbers to different things, or obeys instructions hidden in the text you selected. When a check refuses, Aurator uses your standard cleanup instead, or leaves your selected text as it was.
Your voice in any Claude or ChatGPT chat
Superwhisper has two tools here, both for developers. A Claude Code skill reads your dictation history and sets up Superwhisper's own modes to match your tone. And its command line tool can run as an MCP server, which gives AI assistants read access to your dictation history.
Aurator gives you a guide to your voice instead of your history. From about 30 of your longer dictations, it writes My Voice, a guide to how you speak and write, built only from words you actually spoke. Every sentence is checked, and any sentence with an email address, a phone number, a link, an amount of money, a health detail, a private family event, a name or a long quote is taken out, and Aurator shows you what it removed. One button downloads it as a skill for Claude, another copies it for ChatGPT, and Write for me uses it too, so its drafts sound like you. You do not need to be a developer to use any of it.
Nothing to choose
Superwhisper lets you pick from local Whisper models of different sizes, Parakeet, Cohere Transcribe and its own cloud models, and some of the local models are a download of more than a gigabyte.
Aurator uses the speech model Apple provides on the Mac, the one I wrote about in What Actually Works in On-Device Speech Recognition. There is nothing to pick and nothing extra to manage. Once the speech model for your language is on your Mac, dictation, cleanup and the coach all work offline, and with Apple Intelligence the writing does too.
The rest of what US$29 buys
- A dictionary that knows a name from a word. A misheard name of five letters or more is corrected by spelling and by sound. A word the Mac's spelling dictionary knows is never changed, so "strip" never becomes "Stripe". Replacements are exact, and Aurator suggests names that keep coming up in your last 200 dictations.
- History with your audio. Play any dictation back at up to twice the speed, search it, keep favourites, and see what you said beside the AI version. Export what you find as Markdown.
- Two languages, automatically. I speak Spanish and English, so I built Automatic to run your two most used languages over the same recording, on your Mac, and keep the one that reads as real words. More in What "Automatic Language" Actually Means in a Dictation App.
When Superwhisper still fits
- Free, unlimited dictation. If you only need plain speech to text, its free plan never runs out.
- Every device. Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, all on one Pro licence. Aurator is for the Mac only, on macOS 26 or later.
- More languages. More than 100 with its cloud and multilingual models, against Aurator's ten.
- Your choice of model. Local and cloud models of every size.
- Tools for developers. A command line tool and an MCP server.
- Meetings. Pro records meetings, including the sound from calls, summarises them and can label who said what. Aurator is a dictation app for one person.
What I would tell you to do
Give Aurator seven days of your real writing, your emails, your replies and your notes, with the AI styles and Write for me turned on. Then look at what the coach found in your own words. Aurator is at tryaurator.app, and you can download it here. Seven days free, with every feature, then US$29 once, with a full refund within 30 days if it is not for you.
And if you think I got something wrong about Superwhisper, please write to me at hello@tryaurator.app. I would really like to correct it.
