Wispr Flow vs Superwhisper, and the Mac App I Would Choose Over Both
Superwhisper and Wispr Flow from their own pages, on price, privacy and offline use, and why Aurator suits most Mac users who write a lot better.
By Nelson, maker of Aurator

Between these two, Superwhisper is the better pick for most people. It costs less, it can keep your voice on your device, and you can pay once. Wispr Flow is the pick if you are happy for your voice to go to the cloud and you want a meeting notetaker or team plans. But if you write a lot and you work on a Mac, I would choose neither. I would choose Aurator, the app I make. It costs US$29 once, keeps your voice on your Mac by default, writes with Apple's model on your Mac at no extra cost, and coaches you to speak better, where Wispr Flow lists coaching as a plan for later and Superwhisper shows statistics.
Wispr Flow is spelled with no h and no e, so if you searched for Whisper Flow, it is the same app.
I make Aurator, so please read this knowing that. Every fact about Wispr Flow and Superwhisper comes from their own pricing, help and privacy pages, all checked on 7 October 2026, with the links at the end. This is not a hands-on test of either app. It is what each maker says about its own app, set beside what Aurator does.

Why Aurator is the better choice for most Mac users who write a lot
- It costs the least over time. US$29 once, against US$432 to US$540 for three years of Wispr Flow Pro and US$250 to US$306 for Superwhisper Pro.
- Your voice stays on your Mac by default. Wispr Flow always transcribes in the cloud. Superwhisper starts you on its cloud models.
- AI writing is in the price, and on your Mac. Superwhisper keeps its AI for Pro. Aurator's styles, voice edits and Write for me run on Apple's model on your Mac when Apple Intelligence is on.
- It coaches how you speak. Six scores with the formula shown, your crutch words counted, seven levels, 18 spoken lessons, and a Dashboard.
- Every AI draft is checked and waits for your Return.
- Your voice goes into Claude and ChatGPT. A guide built from what you said, with private details taken out.
Price, three years in
Wispr Flow Pro is US$15 a month, or US$12 a month when you pay for the year, which is US$144 a year. Its pricing page shows no way to pay once. Three years comes to US$432 paid yearly, or US$540 paid monthly.
Superwhisper Pro is US$8.49 a month, US$84.99 a year, or US$249.99 once, and one licence covers, in its own words, unlimited Macs and Windows PCs plus your iPhone and Android phone. Three years comes to about US$255 paid yearly, US$306 paid monthly, or US$250 for the lifetime licence.
Aurator is US$29 once for one Mac, US$49 for three Macs, or US$69 for every Mac on your Apple account, with every update included. Over three years that is less than a fourteenth of Wispr Flow Pro paid yearly, and less than an eighth of Superwhisper's lifetime licence.
Refunds differ too. Superwhisper's billing page gives every individual plan bought on its website a 30-day refund window. Wispr Flow's help centre says that when you cancel, you keep Pro until the end of the period you paid for, and unused days are not refunded automatically. Aurator gives a full refund within 30 days, no questions. The longer math is in what a voice app costs over three years.
Where your voice goes
Wispr Flow's data controls page says transcription always occurs on the cloud. Wispr says it keeps zero data retention agreements with the outside AI providers it uses, and that it is SOC 2 Type 2 compliant. A setting called Dictation Cloud Storage decides whether Wispr keeps your transcripts, audio and history on its servers, and another, Improve the model for everyone, decides whether your audio, transcripts and edits may be used to train Wispr's own models. Its Context Awareness reads the text before and after your cursor, any selected text and other text on the screen, and its help centre says it is on by default, so that context goes with your dictation. With it off, Flow still sends the name of the app and the website you are dictating into.
Superwhisper's local voice models transcribe on your device, and its privacy policy says it does not collect audio recordings, transcriptions or personal information when you use the app. With a cloud model on Pro, your audio or text goes to that provider, under zero data retention terms, Superwhisper says.
Aurator turns your speech into text with Apple's speech model on your Mac, and the cleanup and the coach run there too. There is no account, I run no server that could receive your dictations, and it never listens in a password field. Cloud stays off until you turn it on with your own Deepgram and Anthropic keys, and then your words go to your own accounts. I wrote about how to read these promises in what a privacy policy actually promises about your voice.
Working offline
Wispr Flow's help centre says an internet connection is required for transcription. On a Mac or PC, it warns you and saves the audio so you can try again once you are connected.
Superwhisper dictates offline with its local voice models. AI formatting offline needs its local S1-mini model in the Message or Mail mode, and its other AI processing needs the internet.
Aurator dictates, cleans up and coaches with no connection once the speech model for your language has downloaded. With Apple Intelligence on, its styles, voice edits and Write for me work offline too.
How each one writes for you
Wispr Flow cleans up filler words, punctuation and the corrections you make out loud. Its Styles set how formal it writes in each kind of app, in English only. Command Mode edits text or drafts a reply by voice, for paying and trial users, and it is off until you turn it on.
Superwhisper puts its AI in Pro. Its modes run your dictation through a language model, and you can write custom modes with your own instructions.
Aurator's own rules clean every dictation first, with no model, and a line after each paste tells you what changed, for example "3 fillers cut, 3 words tighter." Then you choose a style for each app, Polished email in Mail, plain in Slack, Spanish as the dictation language in WhatsApp. You can select text and say how to change it, or hold the edit key and have Write for me write the whole message.
Every one of those AI drafts waits for you, next to what you said, and goes in only when you press Return. Before you see it, Aurator checks it with plain rules. A Write for me draft is refused if it opens like a chatbot, leaves blanks to fill in, or adds a link, an amount of money, a date or a password request you never gave. A style or an edit is also refused if it drops or adds a "not", moves numbers to different things, or obeys instructions hidden in the selected text.
Coaching, statistics and your own voice
Wispr Flow's Insights show your words per minute against a published typing study, the fixes Flow made, your total words and your streaks, and its what's new page lists coaching on how you communicate as a plan. Superwhisper shows the words you dictated, your average words per minute, the minutes you saved and the mode you use most.
Aurator scores six things from your own dictations, pace, fluency, directness, concision, clarity and vocabulary, each with the formula shown in the app. Fluency, for example, is 100, less 10 for every filler and 6 for every repeated word, per 100 words. It counts your crutch words and shows the filler you lean on and how many times it shows up. An Aura Score climbs seven levels, from Hesitant Speaker to Master Communicator, and only dictations of 25 spoken words or more count toward it. Eighteen short lessons have you answer a question out loud and measure your answer against the lesson's goal. The Dashboard tracks your words a minute and your filler rate per 100 words over time.
Then there is your voice in other tools. Wispr Flow's pricing page says its Notetaker gives MCP access so your meeting notes work in Claude and ChatGPT. Superwhisper's documentation shows a coding agent reading your dictation history to tune its modes. Aurator builds My Voice, a guide to how you speak and write, from about 30 of your longer dictations. It removes emails, phone numbers, links, money amounts, health details, names and long quotes, tells you what it removed, and downloads as a skill for Claude in one click.
And around all of that, a dictionary that corrects a misheard name and never changes a real word, and a History that keeps the audio of every dictation on your Mac.
When Wispr Flow or Superwhisper still fits
- Windows, iPhone or Android. Both run on all four. Aurator is for the Mac only, on macOS 26 or later.
- More than ten languages. Both list more than 100.
- Meetings. Wispr Flow has a Notetaker with limited access on its free plan, and Superwhisper Pro records meetings with call audio. Aurator does neither.
- Teams. Wispr Flow has Growth and Enterprise plans with single sign-on and HIPAA enforcement, and Superwhisper has an Enterprise plan. Aurator is for one person.
- Free use. Superwhisper's free dictation has no word limit, and Wispr Flow gives 2,000 words a week. Aurator has seven free days.
- Older Macs. Wispr Flow runs on macOS 12 and Superwhisper on macOS 13.3.
I compared Aurator with each of them on its own in the Wispr Flow alternative and the Superwhisper alternative.
What I would tell you to do
If you dictate on your phone or a PC, choose between these two, and for most people that means Superwhisper. If you write on a Mac, give Aurator seven days of your real emails and messages first. Aurator is at tryaurator.app, and you can download it here. Seven days free, with every feature, then US$29 once, with a full refund within 30 days if it is not for you.
And if you think I got something wrong about either app, please write to me at hello@tryaurator.app. I would really like to correct it.
