Choosing the Best Dictation App for Your Mac When You Write a Lot
Why Aurator suits most people who write a lot on a Mac, with the facts on nine other apps from their own pages, and who should pick one of them.
By Nelson, maker of Aurator

If you write a lot on a Mac, my answer is Aurator. I make it, so I will show you the reasons instead of asking you to trust me. One payment of US$29 gets you dictation that stays on your Mac by default, AI writing with Apple's model on your Mac at no extra cost, a coach that scores how you speak, and a guide to your own voice for Claude and ChatGPT. Wispr Flow, Willow Voice and Monologue each cost US$144 a year on their yearly plans.
If you need Windows or a phone, more than ten languages, a free plan, or transcripts of meetings, another app in this guide will suit you better, and I say which one near the end.
I make Aurator, so please read this knowing that. Every fact about another app comes from that maker's own pages, checked on 7 October 2026, with the links at the end. I have not tested these apps side by side, so I will not tell you which one hears you best. I will tell you what each maker says, and what Aurator does.
Why Aurator is the better choice if you write a lot on a Mac
- You pay once. US$29 for one Mac. Three years of Wispr Flow, Willow Voice or Monologue on a yearly plan is US$432.
- Your voice stays on your Mac by default. Wispr Flow says its transcription always happens in the cloud, and Aqua Voice says it processes audio on its servers.
- AI writing is in the price. On a Mac with Apple Intelligence, rewrites, voice edits and Write for me run on Apple's model on your Mac, with no key.
- It coaches you. Six scores with the formula shown, your crutch words counted, seven levels, 18 spoken lessons, and a Dashboard with your words a minute and filler rate.
- Every AI draft is checked and waits for your Return.
- Your voice goes into Claude and ChatGPT. A guide built only from what you said, with private details taken out.
- The rest is in the same payment. A dictionary that fixes misheard names and never changes a real word, a style for each app, and History with your audio.
What you pay over three years
These are the main paid plans, as each maker lists them, multiplied out over three years.
- Wispr Flow, Willow Voice and Monologue. US$12 a month on a yearly plan, or US$15 a month. That is US$432 to US$540 over three years.
- Spokenly Pro. US$99.99 a year, about US$300 over three years. Its local models are free.
- Aqua Voice. US$8 a month paid yearly, or US$10 a month, which is US$288 to US$360.
- Superwhisper Pro. US$84.99 a year or US$8.49 a month, which is about US$255 to US$306, or US$249.99 once.
- Aurator. US$29 once for one Mac, US$49 for three Macs, or US$69 for every Mac on your Apple account. Every feature and every update is included, so three years is still US$29.
Some apps here also sell a single payment, VoiceInk, BetterDictation and MacWhisper among them, and they are in the table further down. BetterDictation's Pro cleanup costs US$2 a month billed yearly after three free months, so part of it is a subscription after all. The full math is in what a voice app costs over three years.
Your voice, on your Mac by default
Wispr Flow says its transcription always happens in the cloud. Aqua Voice says it needs an internet connection because it processes audio on its servers. Willow Voice's help centre says it uses cloud models, though its home page also offers an offline mode.
Aurator turns your speech into text with Apple's speech model on your Mac, and its cleanup and coach run there too. There is no account, and I run no server that could receive your dictations. It never listens in a password field. Cloud stays off until you turn it on with your own Deepgram or Anthropic key, and then your words go to your own accounts, never to me. Once the speech model for your language has downloaded, it works on a plane.
AI writing, with nothing more to pay
Aurator's own rules clean every dictation with no model. They take out um and uh and tidy the punctuation, and a line after each paste tells you what changed, for example "3 fillers cut, 3 words tighter."
On a Mac with Apple Intelligence, the writing runs on Apple's model on your Mac too. Styles turn your words into Concise, Polished email or Bullet points, or a style you write. You can set one for each app, Polished email in Mail and plain in Slack. Edit by voice changes selected text when you say how. And Write for me writes a whole message from a short spoken request. Without Apple Intelligence, these work with your own Anthropic key.
Superwhisper keeps its AI processing for Pro. BetterDictation's Pro cleanup uses OpenAI and needs the internet.
A coach for how you speak
Several apps count your words. Wispr Flow's Insights show your words per minute, your total words and your streaks, and its what's new page lists coaching as a plan. Superwhisper shows your words, your average words per minute and the minutes you saved. Willow Voice says it learns how you write and adapts to your tone.
Aurator coaches how you speak, from your own dictations.
- Six scores, each with its formula. Pace, fluency, directness, concision, clarity and vocabulary. Clarity, for example, is 100, less 1.6 for every percent of sentences over 26 words and 6 for every repeated word per 100 words.
- Your crutch words, counted. The filler you lean on and how many times it shows up, the word you soften with, and your longest sentence.
- Seven levels. From Hesitant Speaker to Master Communicator. Only dictations of 25 spoken words or more count, so short commands cannot lift the score.
- Lessons. Eighteen short lessons, three for each score, that you answer out loud. Lesson answers never count in your score.
- A Dashboard. Words a minute, speaking time, your filler rate per 100 words over time, a 120-day heat map, and the hours and apps where you talk.
More on why this matters in The Power of Your Voice.
Drafts that wait, and a voice you can take with you
Every AI draft in Aurator waits for you, next to what you said, and goes in only when you press Return. Before you see it, plain rules check it. A Write for me draft is refused if it opens like a chatbot, leaves blanks, or adds a link, an amount of money, a date or a password request you never gave. A style or a voice edit is also refused if it drops or adds a "not", or moves numbers to different things.
From about 30 of your longer dictations, Aurator builds My Voice, a guide to how you speak and write, from words you actually spoke. It takes out emails, phone numbers, links, money amounts, health details, names and long quotes, shows you what it removed, and downloads as a skill for Claude or copies for ChatGPT. How to Make Claude Write Like You walks through it.
And around all of that, a dictionary that corrects a misheard name of five letters or more and never changes a word the Mac's spelling dictionary knows, and a History that keeps the audio of every dictation, with playback up to twice the speed.

MacWhisper sells in euros, so I give its price as it lists it. Apple's own Dictation comes with macOS, so it is not in the table.
Who should pick something else
- Apple's Dictation, if you dictate now and then. It is built in, free, and Apple says it has no timeout. Apple lists 63 language and region versions.
- Wispr Flow, if you need one app on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, or a meeting notetaker.
- Superwhisper, if you want free unlimited dictation with local models, or one licence for your Macs, PCs and phones.
- MacWhisper, if most of your work is audio files and meetings, with speakers and subtitles.
- VoiceInk, if you want open source code, US$25 for one Mac, or you run a macOS older than 26.
- Spokenly, if you want free local dictation with no account, or you also use Linux.
- Willow Voice, Aqua Voice or Monologue, if you want the same app on your iPhone too.
- BetterDictation, if you want one payment for up to ten devices.
And Aurator's limits, plainly. It is for the Mac only, on macOS 26 or later, made for Apple silicon and not yet tested on an Intel Mac. It works in ten languages. It has no free plan, only seven free days, and it does not record meetings.
What I would tell you to do
If you write every day on a Mac, give Aurator seven days of your real work, and then look at what the coach and the Dashboard found. If you are still weighing the field, how to choose a dictation app goes through the questions one by one.
Aurator is at tryaurator.app, and you can download it here. Seven days free, with every feature, then US$29 once, with a full refund within 30 days if it is not for you. And if I got something wrong about any of these apps, please write to me at hello@tryaurator.app.
