A VoiceInk Alternative That Coaches You and Writes for You, for US$4 More
For US$4 more than VoiceInk on one Mac, Aurator adds a speaking coach, AI writing with nothing to set up, and your voice in Claude. From VoiceInk's pages.
By Nelson, maker of Aurator

If you are on macOS 26 and you write a lot, Aurator is the better choice for most people, even though VoiceInk costs US$4 less for one Mac. For those four dollars, Aurator adds a coach that scores how you speak, Write for me and rewrites on Apple's model with no Ollama to install and no provider to connect, drafts that are checked and wait for your Return, and a guide to your own voice for Claude and ChatGPT. And if you have four Macs or more, US$69 covers every Mac on your Apple account, where VoiceInk lists no plan above three.
Both apps let you pay once and keep your voice on your Mac, so this comes down to what you get for your money.
I make Aurator, so please read this knowing that. VoiceInk is made by a developer called Pax. Everything I say about it comes from its own pages and its code page on GitHub, checked on 7 October 2026, with the links at the end. Near the end I also say plainly who VoiceInk still suits.
Why Aurator is the better choice for most people on macOS 26
- A coach, not only a dashboard. Six scores with the formula shown, your crutch words counted, seven levels and 18 spoken lessons. VoiceInk's Dashboard estimates the time you saved.
- AI writing with nothing to set up. On a Mac with Apple Intelligence, Write for me, styles and voice edits run on Apple's model. VoiceInk points you to Ollama or a cloud provider for emails and rewrites.
- Every AI draft is checked and waits for your Return.
- Your voice goes into Claude and ChatGPT. A guide built from what you said, with private details taken out.
- Every Mac on your Apple account. US$69 once, now and later.
- A longer refund. 30 days, against 14.
- No screen reading. Aurator asks only for the microphone and Accessibility. VoiceInk's Context Awareness reads the window in front of you, which needs Screen Recording.
- The rest is in the same payment. A dictionary that fixes misheard names and never changes a real word, a style for each app, History with your audio, and Automatic for two languages.
The price, Mac by Mac
VoiceInk has three plans, all paid once, with a lifetime of updates. Solo is US$25 for one Mac, Personal is US$39 for up to two Macs, and Extended is US$49 for up to three. Its pricing page lists no plan for more than three Macs.
Aurator's three plans are also paid once, with every update and every feature. US$29 for one Mac, US$49 for three Macs, and US$69 for every Mac signed in to your Apple account, now and later. It covers one person's Macs, so it is not a family plan.
| How many Macs | VoiceInk | Aurator |
|---|---|---|
| One | US$25 | US$29 |
| Two | US$39 | US$49, the three-Mac plan |
| Three | US$49 | US$49 |
| Four or more | No plan listed | US$69, every Mac on your Apple account |
| To try it | A 7-day trial | 7 days, every feature, no card |
| Money back | 14 days, no questions asked | 30 days, no questions |
So VoiceInk costs US$4 less for one Mac and US$10 less for two. At three Macs the price is the same. From four Macs on, Aurator's US$69 plan has no match on VoiceInk's page. With both apps, any cloud provider you connect bills you directly.
AI writing, with nothing to install
With AI enhancement on, a VoiceInk Mode can clean up text, rewrite selected text or draft emails. Its own on-device model, VoiceInk Refine, needs at least 16GB of memory and takes no custom prompts, so for emails and rewrites VoiceInk points you to Ollama or a cloud provider.
On a Mac with Apple Intelligence, Aurator's writing runs on Apple's own model on your Mac, with nothing to install, no key and no provider.
- Styles. Concise, Polished email and Bullet points, or your own, set for each app, Polished email in Mail and plain in Slack.
- Edit by voice. Select text and say "shorten it" or "put it in Spanish".
- Write for me. Hold the edit key, say something like an email to Sam saying the meeting moved to Thursday, and Aurator writes the whole message.
Without Apple Intelligence, these work with Cloud and your own Anthropic key. Under all of it, Aurator's own rules clean every dictation, and a short line after each paste tells you what changed, for example "3 fillers cut, 3 words tighter."
A coach, not only a dashboard
VoiceInk's Dashboard shows your dictation activity, your peak hours, how its models performed, and an estimate of the time you saved, from typing your words at 40 words a minute against how long you spoke. I did not find anything on VoiceInk's pages that scores how you speak.
Aurator has a Dashboard too, with words a minute, speaking time, your filler rate per 100 words over time and a 120-day heat map. Then it coaches you.
- Six scores, each with its formula. Pace, fluency, directness, concision, clarity and vocabulary. Concision, for example, is 100, less 2 for every percent of your words cleanup trimmed and 2.5 for every word your sentences average above 16.
- Your crutch words, counted. The filler you lean on and how many times it shows up, the word you soften with, your most repeated word and your longest sentence.
- Seven levels. An Aura Score from Hesitant Speaker to Master Communicator, with the trend against the period before. Only dictations of 25 spoken words or more count.
- Lessons. Eighteen short lessons that you answer out loud, measured against the lesson's goal. Lesson answers never count in your score.
The coach runs on your Mac and never uses the cloud.
Drafts that are checked and wait for you
Every AI draft in Aurator is shown next to what you said or asked for, and goes in only when you press Return. Before you see it, plain rules check it, with no model involved. A Write for me draft is refused if it opens like a chatbot, leaves blanks to fill in, or adds a link, an amount of money, a date or a password request you never gave. A style or a voice edit is also refused if it drops or adds a "not", moves numbers to different things, or obeys instructions hidden in the selected text.
Your voice, in Claude and ChatGPT
From about 30 of your longer dictations, Aurator builds My Voice, a guide to how you speak and write, using only words you actually spoke. Every sentence is checked, and any sentence with an email address, a phone number, a link, an amount of money, a health detail, a private family event, a name or a long quote is taken out, and Aurator shows you what it removed. One button downloads it as a skill for Claude, another copies it for ChatGPT, and Write for me uses it too, so its drafts sound like you.
VoiceInk's AI writing works from the prompt you choose, your vocabulary and any context you allow. I did not find a feature on its pages that builds a guide to your own voice.
Two languages, one recording
I speak Spanish and English, and I built Aurator's Automatic setting for people like me. It takes your two most used languages from the last 90 days, runs both over the same recording on your Mac, and keeps the transcript that reads as its own language. In VoiceInk, each Mode sets its own model and language, and its documentation says some models detect the language automatically. More in What "Automatic Language" Actually Means in a Dictation App.
The dictionary, History and permissions
Add a name once and Aurator listens for it. A misheard name of five letters or more is corrected by spelling and by sound, a word the Mac's spelling dictionary knows is never changed, replacements are exact, and Aurator suggests names that keep coming up in your last 200 dictations. Every dictation stays in History with its recording, which you can play at up to twice the speed, search and export as Markdown.
On permissions, VoiceInk's Context Awareness can read your selected text, your clipboard and the text in the window in front of you, and reading the screen needs the Screen Recording permission. Aurator asks only for the microphone and Accessibility.
When VoiceInk still fits
- A lower price for one or two Macs. US$25 and US$39, against Aurator's US$29 and US$49.
- Open source. It is under the GPL v3 licence, so anyone can read the code and build it.
- Older macOS. It runs on macOS 14.4 or 15 and later, depending on which of its pages you read. Aurator needs macOS 26.
- Your choice of speech model. Parakeet, Nemotron, Whisper, Cohere Transcribe, SenseVoice and Apple Speech, plus ten cloud providers.
- More languages. Through its models it covers languages Aurator does not, such as Arabic and Hindi.
- An app for iPhone and iPad. On its own licence. Aurator is for the Mac only.
There are more pay-once apps in my guide to dictation apps with no subscription.
What I would tell you to do
If you are on macOS 26, give Aurator seven days of your real emails and messages, use Write for me a few times, and look at what the coach found in your words. Aurator is at tryaurator.app, and you can download it here. Seven days free, with every feature, then US$29 once, with a full refund within 30 days if it is not for you.
And if you think I got something wrong about VoiceInk, please write to me at hello@tryaurator.app. I would really like to correct it.
